User Story: Automated Temperature Monitoring in the Laboratory

Challenge

As an application-oriented research institute with a laboratory accredited according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018, we needed a reliable temperature monitoring system that could integrate seamlessly into our existing laboratory execution system. The goal was to make monitoring more efficient and respond immediately to out-of-control situations.

Background

The three analytical departments of IUTA were seeking a solution to improve the manual, resource-intensive process of temperature monitoring. Prior to implementing the essentim system, temperature control was performed using paper-based processes and data loggers, which caused delays in identifying issues and consumed significant personnel resources.

Solution

Following the implementation of the essentim system, temperature monitoring now occurs online and in real-time. Out-of-control situations are immediately detected, communicated online via email or SMS, and addressed promptly. The integration with the Laboperator laboratory execution system was seamless and required minimal configuration effort.

By integrating the essentim system, we have revolutionized our temperature monitoring. Out-of-control situations are now detected in real-time, and we have significantly reduced personnel resources. The seamless integration into our existing systems has noticeably simplified our daily workflows.

Results

The new system has led to significant savings in critical personnel resources. Additionally, it has helped identify patterns in the usage behavior of cooling units, which has supported staff training efforts. Application-specific alerts, communicated via email, SMS, or even phone calls, ensure improved monitoring and provide complete documentation of any detected deviations.

Future

After the successful implementation for cooling units, the laboratory plans to expand the monitoring system to other areas, including laboratory rooms and analytical instruments.
